While out and about today, I saw a beautiful, friendly dog with a beautiful, friendly guy on the leash (who was walking whom?). I said hello as the dog sniffed and nudged me, saying "Hello" in the doggy way. I pet the dog (and may have given a tiny thought to petting the owner). Such a nice beginning...

I said lovely things about the doggy and learned the dog's name was "Sammy". Since the dog had long hair, I couldn't tell the gender of the dog. When I asked "Is Sammy a boy?" and the owner said "It used to be."

Used to be? USED TO BE? Oh geez, next time someone has a target-specific instant disintegration raygun available, I'd like to aim it at the people who perpetrate the idea that being neutered means losing gender identity. Sheeeeeesh. If we applied that to people, well.... *grumble grumble*

I know plenty of male dogs that are still male, just not able to reproduce. They act like male dogs except for the obvious ways. And ALL of my cats have been neutered, and yet retained gender behaviors, male or female, through and through.

Certainly this isn't the only misconception (bad word choice?!?!?) about pets, or even the worst misconception. But geez, fella - are you so worried about your own male status that a safe, medically advised neutering of your dog is a threat to you??????

Alas, the beautiful, friendly owner's attitude ruined a perfectly lovely chance meeting on a sunny afternoon. I pet the dog one last time, and proceeded on to my main goal: Acquisition of Chocolate Bunnies! Mission Accomplished!

I could definitely give a Rodney McKay-style rant about people and their attitudes towards animals. But, I couldn't do it with his flair or bluster.

So, I'll leave it at this: Someone showing disrespect for a pet (or other animal) will very soon show disrespect for you. We deserve better!
